Batteries are hooked in series. I have owned the tractor over 4 years and it has always started within 1 second of hitting the start button. After the alt rebuild I did get real high amp reading, slowly tapering down to tiny reading,over an hour, just like you would expect to see. I have had some problems getting the fuel lever all the way over to the 'off' detent lately. Just goes to 'very low idle,sputter,quit', and won't go back to full off left,and I have left it there. Could leaving this lever in the 'somewhat on' position be causing a drain on the battery? I'll see if my voltmeter leads can reach the starter lug and ground cable. All the connections are extra clean and shiny, and TIGHT! If I don't see 14+ there then I'll move on to the resistor,
