I have a 51 H I bought a couple months ago at an auction and didn't get to see it run of move. When I got it home I noticed it was super noisy so I checked the rear end grease...full of water! and very little gear oil in it since the water displaced the gear oil and it leaked out through the left rear axel seal. There was no signs of the leak since someone painted it up all pretty. I drained it out and out came some peices of ball bearing retainer (the wavy strip that holds the balls in). I am sure there are other worn out bearings in there. Also all these old tractors use straight cut gears in the rear ends. they are the most effecient and create little or no side thrust under load. straight cut gears have one drawback and that it they are noisy compared to helitical cut gears used in cars. If you have ever driven an older car with a stick shift tranny you may have noticed reverse makes a whining noise compared with the forward gears. Reverse has straight cut gears and the forward has helitical cut gears. Nascar uses all straight cut gears in the Jericho trannys they use and you can hear the tranny whine when they go slower like under yellow. The weight of gear oil will not usually quiet a gear set that has slop from bad bearings or worn teeth. I would check it out as I hear if a bearing ball gets loose from a cage it can get inbetween the bull gear and housing and break a hole in the bottom of the rear end and is a real pain to fix.

Paint is another, the modern acrylic enamels are great for resistance to grease and fuel stains, retaining their shine and they last forever; unlike enamels and lacquers . Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
