To get the axle out you will need to pull the top cover and remove the bull gear from the axle. Then the axle and housing will come off the tractor. There should be a seal on that end of the axle too. I have heard of some taking the PTO unit off and reaching bull gears from the rear opening, I have never tried it. Looks to me like it would be easier to take that top cover off.
