I am not going to try and trouble-shoot the problem but, yes, you can pull start in diesel mode. It is how the auctioneer crew started my 650D. There was nothing wrong with the gas side. They just thought it would be easier to start it with a chain. The battery may have been weak or the starting tank was empty. Can't remember. That was the last time it was ever pull started.
