Serial number is on a thin metal plate that is riveted to the bell housing. That is the large casting bolted to the rear of the engine. Some people mistakenly call it "transmission." If anything, there should be evidence of the plate there. Four holes or four rivet heads or the leftovers of the plate. If it's been removed you will never know the exact serial number. The engine serial number is on a machined flat spot below the spark plugs. That will be CLOSE, but not the same. Grab some casting dates. These are cast on the larger pieces like the engine block and are in the format of 11-22-X; two numbers, and a letter. 0 is 1945, N is 1944, M is 1943, L is 1942.
