Engine Building

I have a question about building engines with non original parts. I was always taught that an connecting rod and piston are balanced to the crankshaft. So when a piston and connecting rod from one engine can be made to fit in another engine that connecting rod and piston have to be made to weigh the same as the original ones did. Please help me to better understand this.
