We used to have the same problem with our MD after sitting all winter. As I recall, ours was usually caused by one of two problems--- either the linkage that does the actual switching was stuck, or there was some sort of arm inside the injector pump that was sticking. With the first problem, the throttle and switching levers all felt like they were working fine, but spraying a little bit of penetrating oil around that round piece where the switchover rods finally end on the left side of the motor and then working them back and forth a bit usually solved the problem. It's been a long time, but it seems there was linkage on top of the motor that needed a squirt, too. The 2nd problem occurred only twice, and that was after the MD sat for a couple of years, and fixing it involved taking the pump apart, but not too deeply as I recall.
