if you put the distributor in and took a mag out, you need a different ignition switch and a wire running from the battery to the switch, if you want to "hot wire" it to see if it will start, run a jumper wire from you battery hot side, not the terminal that goes to the tractor frame, (dont know if you are 6v or 12v system) to the side of the coil that is opposite the terminal going to the distributor. this should get the coil working. you should have either 6 or 12v at the coil.
