Any decent rod will work. The only thing that has bearing here is that the surface is prepped and preheated. You need to use a dremel or angle grinder and dig into the crack following it and grinding a V channel in it. Not deep enough to go through but deep enough to fill nearly half of the thickness of the manifold. With your acetelyne torch in one hand and wender in the other, preheat the crack till it turns a dull red. Once this temp is acquired, lay your weld into the crack and stitch the crack up while keeping the torch just ahead of your work to maintain the heat. Once finished let it cool slow. Works 100% If you are afraid that the crack will grow with the expansion of preheat then take a 1/8" drill and drill into each end of te crack. This will eliminate the fault.
