Although I'm not sure Bob has a REAL problem (see my posts above about normal gear noise and old tractors), if it develops that he does have a problem, he would do well to consider shipping the removed transmission off to a rebuilder. I, too, always farm out such work. It's not rocket science, but you rarely get the first one right. It takes experience, and experience is best accumulated on other's tractors! (Just kidding.) And, I've noticed at least one thread on the Ford 8N boards that started out something like, "Tractor hard to start and won't pull a load. I've checked the gas flow, carb, and spark and they're all good. It can't be the compression because I just rebuilt this engine..."

Tractor Traction - by Chris Pratt. Our first bout with traction problems came when cultivatin with our Massey-Harris Pony. Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights.
