This is certainly true with the self-cleaning lugs used on all modern tractor tires. I don"t think this was true of the old-fashioned lugs on steel-wheeled F-10s, John Deere As, etc. When someone asks you to pull them out of the mud with your tractor, don"t try it in reverse! The lugs won"t shed mud and the wheel will become slick VERY quickly. I once pulled out a VERY stuck Ford 8N which had becomed bogged when the owner tried to pull out his little Toyota truck backwards.

Tractor Traction - by Chris Pratt. Our first bout with traction problems came when cultivatin with our Massey-Harris Pony. Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights.
