O.T. magneto question (BMW)

I'm just finishing up reassembling a friend's '62 BMW R50. Once we started it, we couldn't shut it off, i.e. pulling the key out didn't help. It appears that the control terminal on the mag is grounded all the time, even with no wire attached. I have absolutely no experience with magnetos. Any ideas ( or theories) what could be wrong with this thing ? Thanks Greg
