You need to get No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and then rotate the rotor to the No1 plug tower and then install the mag or distributor. It will probably take another helper while someone holds their thumb over the plug while the engine is slowly cranked over until the notch on the damper is aligned with the pointer. Whether it's a mag or distributor the
plug wires need to be in the correct firing order
