Yes...the front ring has to come off. If you do not have the proper tool to remove that ring you will ruin it. D & D speedometer, 2001 West County Road C, St Pa;ul, Minn 55113, Phone # 651 631-0030 has rebuilt 4 of mine and did an excellent job.
