should my coil get hot?

when running my M i noticed that when i first start it, it runs great....as time goes on it starts to miss more, run rougher, well today i went out to work with the points and let it run for about 20 minutes and it started to sputter and try to die under a load, touched the coil and it's really warm...not enough to scald me but hot none the less...is this a sign of a bad coil?
