I think you have low compression on one or more cylinder(s), and you have sucessfully diagnosed the problem with this tractor, using your ears and a little careful observation; I think you can confirm it by doing the individual compression checks.

I'm sorry it might need engine and/or valve work but you've done a good job figuring it out!
