Jim pretty much covers the whole topic. I just thought I would add that the pump shaft on my 49 Super A had a slight groove worn in the pump shaft. I took the pump apart and just polished that spot and installed a new o-ring along with some o-ring grease and it works great. No more loss of fluid to the crankcase. Like Jim states if the groove is very slight it shouldnt be a problem. If it doesnt solve the problem then you can try a speedi sleeve or a rebuilt unit !
