Power steering valve thingy

Hello, I see all of the char-lynn style power steering units with a separate power steering pump for sale. I assume they are for a Farmall with a belly pump? I say this because a SMTA and a 450 doesn't have a separate pump for the power steering. This leads me to my question. How does the valve that diverts hydraulic pressure to the power steering pump work? I grew up on my dads SMTA and I can never remember not having power steering even when lifting a loader full of snow and steering at the same time. Is it some sort of a diverter or priority valve? I've never given it any thought before but now I'm looking to add power steering to my SM stage two and I'd rather not add a pump for the power steering. I'd rather add the "power steering valve thingy" instead. It just seems simpler and cleaner to me. Thanks, Mark
