Been there, done that, and IT WORKS. Broke a left rear axle out of a Super M while plowing with duals a few years ago. Rigged a way to slide the tractor to the barn on a "crutch" under that corner, then took the thing apart as you mention. Replaced axle that afternoon and we were plowing again the next morning. Helps a lot to already know what things look like in there before doing it this way.
