Thanks for the help from all who contacted me. I'm up and running, and charging it looks like. I switched to neg ground system. Strangely, the ignition coil was already wired for neg ground and I just left it that way. Evidently, the primary winding of this coil is not polarity sensitive. My alt was not internally regulated, so I had to get an electronic volt reg, which I wired between "field" and switched positive voltage. Ran the "BAT" line from the alt through the new ammeter to switched pos voltage, and it is running fine and charging. For all who are interested, I can attest that switching polarity on the old starter "does not make it spin backwards." I have learned that this is because the current flow is being reversed in both the armature and field circuits in the starter. Thanks again all.
