How do you date a tractor

How do you date a tractor with no serial number and is so old it is hard to get info on like take for example an old tractor i have is all steel and is a mccormick deering no serail # just a #on the air breather how would a guy go about finding out how old his tractor is if all he has is the # off the air breather or some of you call it an air cleaner but anyway if anybody has great advice on how to date this old tractor i would love to here from you thanks, matt
