First, I would take a look at the coil to see if it is 12v. If it's 6v I would also look to see if a resistor was put in the line reducing the line voltage to 6v. You should also check on how the coil is connected to determine positive or negtave ground (12v is generally negative ground and 6v is generally positive). Second, I would look at the lights to see if they are 12v or 6v, providing they are still their and work. If you don't care about lights or plan on switching to 12v or don't worry about them as you will have to replace them anyway. Third, the charging system. You can look for markings but the generator with an adjustable regulator can be set for a 12 volt system (I think you the generator is capable of putting out 28V but it will cook your battery). From the above you should be able to dertermine the voltage and ground(pos or neg). If your pruchasing a battery I would go for the 12v and convert the tractor. A 12v battery, 12v coil(or resist to keep the 6v coil), and 12v lights are all the parts you need. Install the parts/rewire for negative ground, start it up and adjust the voltage regulator. Now your 12 v. Don't worry about the starter it can handle 12v, and the electrical wire insulation is rated well beyond 12volts

"Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this
