Gary - If the tractor has been converted to an alternator, you are virtually assured it will be negative ground. If it still has a generator, mount the battery and connect both cables - it doesn't matter yet which post is grounded. Now turn on the lights or the ignition (but DON'T start the engine!) and check the ammeter. If it indicates discharge, the battery is installed correctly. If it indicates charge, you guessed wrong on the polarity - simply swap the two battery cables and you're be good to go.
