M Piston Pins

I just dis-assembled my "M" for overhaul & noticed that the piston pins were 'press-fit', as opposed to slip-fit, like on our old Deeres. I remember learning in shop class that a guy should heat these piston bosses gently with a propane torch & let the pins simply drop in. Is this the recommended method for these tractors? I was surprised that the pistons had 1" pins, as I thought the "M" was slightly over 1.25". My IH dealer was also surprised, as the slugs are made for a 4" bore, as opposed to the 4 1/8 kits available for the 400. Any ideas? We ordered the 4" firecraters w/ standard "M" pins/bushings, as they measure up OK.
