I agree with Mike ISW, misdiagnosis has caused 6 volt systems to get an undeserved bad name.
You should not lose a battery that quickly.
A few questions:
Do you have the original type generator with the 4 position light/low-high charge rate switch?
If you do, what is the charge rate at low and high settings?
Do you run the tractor a lot or does it sit a lot and run once and a while?
A 6 volt system should handle an A with no trouble and a minimum of maintenance. I have a B with a battery that was installed in 1994 and it started and ran yesterday just fine. Only about 20 deg but an unheated shed and it hadn't run in at least a month.
