Do everything you can to isolate the problem(s) first. Every tractor I have bought has needed the valve clearances adjusted. Also pulling the valve cover is alot easier than pulling the engine.
My latest acquisition (Super H) was missing and got worse when warm. I just checked 2 days ago and it had 3 valves with zero clearance. Needless to say it runs alot better now!
My Super M had a quarter inch on one valve, and a C I opened up had a bent push rod.

Tractor Traction - by Chris Pratt. Our first bout with traction problems came when cultivatin with our Massey-Harris Pony. Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights.
