Thank you all for your responses! Both gears are marked for proper meshing indeed! I should have cleaned the parts better to examine them closely before asking. I think I sort of panicked...
Thanks very much anyway, because I now even now what these marks really mean. The large gear has L and R on it and the small gear has a bevelled tooth. Cheers, Hendrik.
