To get good results using the newer high solids urethane paints you do need to spend some $ to get a good HVLP gun. For a conventional gun you can get by with $50 because it is old technology but the "good" HVLP guns have only been around the last few years so they are pricey. I started out with a $80 gun from Wal-mart but I now have a Sharpe Platinum ($350) and I would not want to go back. As expensive as the urethane paints are the HVLP guns will quickly pay for themselves by getting twice as much paint onto the surface compared to a conventional gun.
