If means swaping a IH american built 360 for a 5.9L Cummins I wouldn't touch it. That 360 will walk all over the Cummins on torque. This is why the old Farmalls were great. I dont think I would even replace a IH 282 with that Cummins. If you did not crank the hp above new tractor ratings that IH 282 was efficient engine. My 656D went 9000 hours to first rebuild, and averaged one Cdn. gal per hour on fuel for the period at hand. I will admit the 656 did mainly spraying, planting and mower conditioner. It also plowed 300 acres every year with a 5 x 16 semi-mount. On the other side I had my 560D (same engine 282) cranking a 100 hp at 2200. It went 11,000 hours, two sets pistons and sleeves. At the 11 as they say it put two pistons through the side of block. 560 is now a gas modified puller. 656 is still farming.
