My opinion: You're gettin old and crochety.... Seriously, if the tranny whines in 1 thru 4 and reverse but not in 5th, problem's likely with the input shaft/countershaft constant mesh gears. Proof is to put a load on the PTO with the transmission in neutral. If you again hear the whine it's gotta be the constant mesh gearset - since that's the only pair in contact and carrying a load. Whine could be because the gears are badly worn, or improper shaft spacing is causing incorrect tooth clearance (either too tight or too loose) at the gear mesh.
