Personally I'd opt for installing a new 12 volt solenoid. They're readily available and cheap - plus you don't have to mess with a series resistor. However if you do decide to stick with the 6 volt solenoid, figuring out the series resistance to add is easy: Simply use an ohmmeter and measure the solenoid coil resistance. The external series resistance required will the same as the solenoid coil resistance. Make sure however the series resistor you choose has sufficient power dissipation capacity - I wouldn't go less than 25 - 30 watts.
