Steven: Back befor cabs were common, many used "heat-housers." The sides were covered with canvas all the way back to the operator platform where there was a sort-of cab of canvas. The idea was to channel the "heated air" back to the operator. Well.. 40degree air from engine is better than the straight in-the-face minus 20 air.
