It's a plastic thread (They make several sizes) that you put into the gap you want to measure. When you clap everything back together, it crushes the plastic thread, mashes it flat. You take it all back apart and compare the width of the now flat thread to the chart that's on the envelope the p-gauge comes in to find out just how wide/narrow a gap it was that made the thread that flat! Wickedly simple concept, and for most purposes sufficiently accurate at a reasona ble cost. Great stuff!
