Everything being equal, #2 sounds much better. Carb rebuild and adjustment will cost no more than $75 bucks...probably less. They are silly simple to clean and fix so you can do it yourself. Accomodate your wife this time and when the next bargain tractor is found you have all the leverage you need...maybe you can get something other than an M (not that there is anything wrong with Ms, but variety is the spice of life).
