If you must have it in gear before you start the engine then I assume you are depressing the clutch peddle when you start the engine. You then release the clutch and go. What I think you mean is that you cannot change gears while the engine is running and with the clutch peddle depressed. Was it doing this when you (I assume)drove it before you bought it? Does it have a belly mount hydraulic lift-all? Does it work? Does it have oil? The belly mount lift-all acts as a dampening device to slow down the countershaft gears from spinning so fast and then you can change gears. Those things don't have syncronizers. I'm not sure how the ones with the live hydraulic pump works. Maybe the TA has something to do with it. I did repairs to the belly pump on my M and with the pump off I wanted to take a drive around the pasture. I too had to start it in gear and then drive off. I went on to remove the clutch and check it out while I was up in there. There is no magic to these. Get a owner's manual and check the linkage and fluids. If the previous owner replaced the clutch we might assume he did it correctly and it was working. (I am assuming a lot.) It's possible something came loose or that little coupling to the hydraulic lift-all unit fell out.
