In 1972 fresh out of high school I bought a used '67 model 1206 as my first tractor. That old 1030 was pretty much left to the part time hired man who was a retired farmer who was also an IH man. He never complained much but you could tell he'd rather have been sitting on one of the big red tractors. (His largest tractor was a 656 diesel). Wasn't that time period awesome as far as IH machinery goes? I remember Dad was debating on the 856 versus 1256 and think he had his mind set on an 856 but the dealer brought that new 1256 out and after running it he just had to have it. As you say I remember that new smell also.
