The kerosene/distillant carbs have an adjustment screw for idle and intermediate speed mixture whereas the gas carb only had idle mixture adjustment. After the engine warms up to operating temp, check and adjust both mixture screws. Maybe they are set enough to keep the engine running but need a little fine tuning to get it started. Only way to know about the compression is to do a test.
