There is only one safe way to crank a tractor. Stand with your right side at the front of the tractor, lift the crank from bottom with four fingers of the right hand around the handle. Lift only 1/4 turn. Back the crank down and lift again. Never crank over the top. Never crank all the way around. You really can break your arm. You break your arm by cranking wrong. The tractor does not break your arm because it does not know you exist. Most Farmalls in good shape will crank in two or three lifts. When the tractor kicks back it will open your fingers and not break anything. If it kicks regularly, retard the timing a couple of degrees. Timed right they rarely kick. A starter shop will replace your Bendix if you have trouble. Your ring gear is probably OK.
