M clutch problems

I have a 1940 farmall M. Today I was trying to pull up some old trees and all of a sudden it went from spinning the tires to the clutch slipping. It got worse and worse and would barely even move driving it back to the shed. So, how bad of a problem is this? Is it just in need of adjustment or replacement? I have the IT shop manual but I am not a mechanic so its not as clear the me as some. Do I have to split the tractor to get at the clutch. It sounded like for early M's you didn't have to. I apprecaite any help I can get on the subject. Thanks! Jeff PS It also has an MW hand clutch on it that doesnt work. Could it be possible that this is making it slip too?
