130 Belt Pulley Drive Install

I am attempting to install a belt pulley drive on my 1957 Model 130 and I guess I lack some basic mechanical skill. Two questions:

1. The bevel gear to be installed on the PTO drive shaft does not slide right on. It seems to be the right size but is very tight. Do I use a wooden block and mallet, do I heat it, what is the trick? I don't want to damage anything.

2. The I&T manual states that shims are required so that "heels of gears (belt pulley and PTO shafts) are are in register and backlash is 0.004- 0.006." What is backlash and how is it measured? I understand how the shims work, but how do I tell how the gears are meshing once I have the belt pulley unit bolted up? I dont have xray eyes. Thanks for your help
