You can tell an old IH diesel from a mile away because the exhaust is on the wrong side: the carb, magneto, and exhaust are all on the right. When new they were great reliable tractors. In cold weather they will start right up, and all the heat is in the cylinders during warmup, right where you want it. I used to work a TD-14 with the same engine, only a little bigger. With a bad battery in the tractor I had to jump start it from my Honda Civic. Not a pretty sight, but it always started. My next dozer was a TD-18 with the same engine only 6 cyl with two heads. Started like a dream in any weather. Their major shortcoming, other than having double the moving parts (maybe triple) of either a gas or diesel engine, was that you must cool them down after working before killing them or you could warp a head. But get it hot and an old MD will pull hard all day. I've got three of them and never tire of walking a visitor up to the gas side and say "look at my diesel" with the spark plug wires and mag staring them in the face. When they complain it's not a diesel, I say "oh, yeah, I forgot, look at this side" and the injector pump makes them a believer. Switching from gas to diesel is also a blast, especially on the bigger engines, lots of acceleration noise and black smoke.
