Need W-4 help

Dad and I are working on his W-4 and need advice on starter removal. Once you remove the two front bolt, there is no room to move the starter back to disengage, due to one of the bolts that hold the bellhousing to the transmission. The only other way we see is to remove the belt pulley ass'y, then remove the bellhousing assembly to take the starter with it. Can't believe it would be designed that difficult. HELP!!!
