Hi Paul - Best to set the valves with the motor fully warmed up. I do it with the motor stopped: Turn the crank so #1 is on TDC firing (both valves closed) and adjust the #1 valves. Now turn the crank exactly 1/2 revolution and set #3 valves. Another 1/2 turn and do #4, and finally one more 1/2 turn and do #2. My father in law on the other hand sets his with the motor at idle. It works fine, but I'm not real fond of working that close to a hot manifold, spinning fan blade, moving generator belt, etc. (Still got all my fingers and would like to keep it that way!) ...Bob M
