I know for a fact that the rims used from 1979 till 1985 were painted, not plated. And I can be almost 100% sure that the entire 86 Series run was that way. As to what was used prior to that I can't be sure. But if I had to guess I'd say paint was used all the way back to at least the double beaded rims first used on the 350's & 450's.
