I have tried a rust inhibitor called Plasti-Cote
which I get at the Advance auto parts store here
in NC. It seems to work pretty well. You clean the
area, coat the area with Plasti-cote, and then can
paint it. I hope this will be of some help. Others
may have more and better advice.....
