F450 transmission sticks in 1st gear

seems that lately the tractor trans is getting stuck in 1st gear a lot. the shifter pushes the slider thing too far foreward and then the shifter prong can't reach it too pull it back. does anyone know what might be wrong and how to fix. currently i unscrew the three shifter bolts, undo the shifter and manually push the slider back with a pry bar to neutral and then reinstall the shifter where its supposed to be. of course i block the wheels first, so i don't run myself over.
