Turn off the valve that holds the lift up and then see if the lift still goes down. If it does, then you have a bad cylinder/piston. It it stays up when you close the shut off valve, then your control valve is bad. Likely it is a bad seal on the piston. I had a 424 with this same problem and had to replace the piston, because it was worn to bad to replace the seal. I suppose the 444 is the same as the 424, which had a leather seal on the piston. To replace it with a more modern O ring, you will have to take it to a machine shop to have a groove cut for an O ring. However, in my case, the piston had been rubbing on the cylinder and was worn too badly to do this and the piston had to be replaced with a new one. The part is quite expensive from IH. The mechanic that did my work knew that the parts from a Mahindra tractor would fit. He used a Mahindra lift piston and it fit perfetly and cost less than 1/2 of the IH part. You'll have to drain the fluid and take the top off the hydraulic unit to get to these parts.

Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
