I don't remember an actual figure but I tightened mine as tight as I could with a 12" ratchet. Those bolts shouldn't strip in the crankshaft at around 100 ft-lbs. Make sure to bend over the locking tabs to prevent loosening. The tapered bolts in the coupling should take out all the slack. If I'm reading your post correctly, it sounds like you have worn holes in the wavy part of the coupling. The rubber grommets should only allow a very small amount of flexing. If you can twist the clutch shaft at all without moving the transmission input shaft you have too much wear.
