carb on a td9

I have an early TD9 that has had problems starting. Found out that the head gasket is blown between 2&3. I took the carb apart thinking my trusty engine manual would tell me the setting for the venturi disc. What I am refering to is the phenolic disc with the spring under it and a long stem brass nut with four slots cut in it for a cotter pin. It appears that the disc can be adjusted anywhere from tight to the carb body to about 1/4" gap. I suspect that somewhere in between would be the correct setting. By the way, I am having the head magna-fluxed to see if there are any of those nasty cracks I have read so much about. Lynn
