To test, pull the ground cable from the battery while the tractor is running. If it stays running swap the wires to the ammeter. If it dies swap the cables. I don't think you could have a 12v conversion and get it to run with a 6v battery without many bad things happening.... You said there was a "spark from the negative cable" thats bad. Figure out where sparks are coming from, tighten connections make sure connections are clean metal to clean metal before continuing. My Super M was run hooked up backwards for probably 5 years before I figured it out. Then it took me 3 years to replace the regulator, and the battery to get things working right again.
